Chennai Metropolis has been expanding quickly, and with it, the amount of traffic on the highways. Thus, the necessity for a new rail-based fast transit system has been recognized, and the Tamil Nadu government has chosen to carry out the Chennai Metro Rail Project in order to achieve this goal. The goal of this project is to give Chennai residents access to a contemporary, affordable, efficient, dependable, and quick form of public transportation that is well-integrated with existing public and private transportation options like buses, suburban trains, and MRTS.

A 118.9-kilometer network with 128 stations is the scope of the phase II extension. Three corridors make up this system: Corridor 3 connects Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 km), Corridor 4 connects Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 km), and Corridor 5 connects Madhavaram to Sholingandllur (47.0 km). With IDC included, the project is expected to cost Rs. 63,246 Crores (Rupees Sixty three Thousands Two Hundred and Fourty Six only). The Indian government is currently reviewing and approving this plan. By the end of 2028, the project is expected to be finished.
